There are careers that follow a straight line – and then there are those that are reshaped entirely by circumstance, instinct and a willingness to step off the expected path.
My journey into luxury guest ranch writing and travel content strategy didn’t begin in a boardroom or agency.
It began with redundancy, a one-way ticket out of the UK and a six-month solo backpacking trip that quietly rewired everything I thought I knew about work, success and freedom.
Today I am a specialist ranch travel writer, editor and SEO- and dream- driven content strategist working at the intersection of luxury travel, experiential storytelling and the guest ranch industry.
My work supports guest ranches and the world's leading ranch travel platforms, Gene Kilgore's Top50 Ranches and Ranchweb, helping them refine their voice, elevate their online presence and connect more meaningfully with ultra-high net worth travellers seeking authentic, high-end wilderness experiences.
In this featured interview, originally published by Canvas Rebel, I share how a chance opportunity in the ranch travel world evolved into a 14-year (so far!) niche career; why editorial discipline matters more than ever in the age of AI search and what it really takes to build long-term trust in a highly-specialised luxury travel market.
This is the story behind the strategist in me – how deep industry immersion, editorial precision and a love of the outdoors shaped my career; built not on volume, but on voice, clarity and lasting impact.
Thanks for featuring me, Canvas Rebel!
Interview with Ranch Travel Writer & Editor, Kate Hammarén
Canvas Rebel: So today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Hammarén, Specialist Ranch Travel Writer & Editor for Guest Ranches & Luxury Adventure Travel Brands. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kate thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
KH: It was 2012. I was in my early 30s and after a bad relationship breakup, had just bought my first flat, was in a marketing job that I loved and life felt good.
All seemed to be going very well in my world, until, well, it didn’t! The company I worked for went bust and we were all made redundant on the spot.
This was catastrophic – how was I going to pay my mortgage? I worked a couple of temp jobs to tide me over while I desperately searched for a role in what I love and do best: writing and editing.
There was nothing. Having been Assistant Editor for a leading UK equestrian magazine prior to my marketing role, I was keen to get back into publishing, but there was nothing available. Zilch. “You’re overqualified”, I kept hearing.
Frustrating was not the word. I didn’t know what to do. Temping and bar jobs weren’t going to keep me afloat (mentally or financially!) for long, so I decided to take the plunge, pack up my flat, rent it out and go solo backpacking for six months to finally see the world and work out my next move.
As I meandered around south east Asia, I found myself realising I actually didn’t want to go back to the office 9-5, I wanted to work for myself, on my own terms, somewhere warm, sunny and by the sea so I could indulge my passions, travel and scuba diving.
I wanted to be ‘The Writer’, ‘The Editor’ and ‘The Boss’, and realised, with the wonderful advent of laptops and the internet, I could indeed do all this from anywhere in the world.
And what did I love the most? Travel!
It all came together for me in a rather serendipitous way, when watching the sunset on a beautiful beach in the Philippines.
“Yes!” I thought, “I want to be a travel writer and editor, and write about wonderful places around the world”.
And as luck would have it, soon after, a colleague from the magazine I used to work for was moving away from freelance writing and had a client in the ranch vacations industry who needed someone just like me to evolve their online editorial, and grow their web content and social media.
Was I in? You bet! This incredible niche perfectly combined my vast experience in the equestrian world, with a long-standing love of all things ranch- and wild west-related – and of course, travel.
I knew this was the niche for me. The work from my very first client began to trickle in and I realised I could do this for real, so got serious with setting up as my official business Kate Hammarén Travel Writing & Editing.
As things progressed, I finally invested in my first website in 2018 – a huge step forward.
More clients have since joined and I am so thankful to still work with my very first client to this day.

CR: Kate, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
KH: Sure! I’m Kate Hammarén from the UK and I’m a specialist writer, editor, and content strategist for the luxury and adventure travel and guest ranch industry.
At the heart of what I do is storytelling that sells and I help my clients articulate who they really are, then translate that into clear, compelling, search-smart content that speaks to the right audience.
My path into this niche wasn’t accidental, it evolved from a deep, personal connection to equestrian, travel and the outdoors, paired with a sharp eye for language and brand voice.
Over a decade ago, I began working closely with guest ranches and luxury travel brands, and quickly saw a gap: incredible destinations with powerful stories, but many with content that didn’t fully capture their magic – or perform in search. I’ve built my business to bridge that gap.
Today, I work with international guest ranches and since 2016, my role has been Managing Editor for leading ranch travel platforms, Top50 Ranches and Ranchweb, working alongside ‘The world’s leading authority in guest ranching’ (American Express) Gene Kilgore, offering a blend of ranch client management, writing, editing and SEO/AI-ready content strategy.

My services range from long-form blog content and web copy to full-scale content audits and brand voice refinement.
I also craft ranch client landing pages, write new and elevate existing blogs, and audit my client websites for performance and clarity.
My focus is always the same: helping brands communicate their value in a way that feels both elevated and authentic – and that actually drives results.
The problems I solve are often twofold. On one side, there’s the visibility issue: guest ranches struggling to be found in an increasingly competitive, search-driven landscape.
On the other, there’s the messaging issue: brands that don’t quite sound like themselves, or aren’t connecting with their ideal guests.
I bring those two sides together, creating content that is not only well written, but strategically built to perform across both traditional SEO and the evolving AI-search landscape.
What sets me apart is that I sit at the intersection of long-term deep industry knowledge, editorial precision and forward-thinking strategy.
I’m not a generalist writer (although I do love to pen my own travels when I have the time!), I understand the nuances of ranch life, luxury positioning and experiential travel.
I also bring an editor’s discipline to everything I do, ensuring every word earns its place. And importantly, I stay ahead of how content is being discovered and surfaced, so my clients aren’t just keeping up: they’re positioned for what’s next.
I’m especially proud of the long-term client relationship I’ve built with ‘The Ranch Guy’ Gene Kilgore and his ranch travel platforms whom I’ve supported for over a decade as dedicated content partner.
There’s a level of trust that comes from consistently delivering work that I’m passionate about and that feels aligned, elevated and effective.
Seeing his brands evolve in confidence, clarity and visibility as a result of that work is incredibly rewarding.
What I want potential clients and collaborators to know is this: I care deeply about the integrity of your wonderfully unique offerings.
I’m not here to produce generic content at volume, I’m here to help you stand out in a meaningful, lasting way. A way that speaks to the very clients with whom you're hoping to connect.
If you value thoughtful storytelling, strategic clarity and content that truly reflects the quality of your offering, we’ll likely be a very good fit!
Ultimately, my work is about helping exceptional places be seen – and experienced – by the people who will value them most.

CR: For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
KH: One of the most rewarding aspects of being a self-employed writer and editor is working really hard on a piece of writing or a hard edit, sending in the first draft to the client and them having only one, two – or no edits!
It’s such a great feeling as, working solo, it’s not as though you have a team of sharp editors to do read-throughs and make tweaks or corrections before submissions.
You really have to make sure the first draft is super polished and it’s wonderful when that pays off with a compliment from the client, too.
I also absolutely love hitting the ‘Publish’ button on a blog or in the CMS for a web page, then seeing my writing and editing work come to life on my or my clients’ websites.
It’s incredibly rewarding to see it all in its final ‘glory’, laid out with pictures, headings, links etc.
And lastly I have to say it’s the freedom of working for yourself – and remotely from anywhere in the world.
Of course you have to be disciplined, but you can choose to work the way that’s best for your productivity, therefore delivering your clients the best work possible.
For example, I know I’m most productive in the mornings, so always prioritise my work for then, and book social or life appointments for late afternoons.
Being able to escape the long UK winters and work remotely somewhere warm and sunny for a couple of months is also so rewarding. By February I am SO ready to see blue skies and warm sandy shores again!

CR: What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
KH: I think my reputation has been built on a combination of deep industry immersion (working with 'The Ranch Guy' Gene Kilgore and over 200 guest ranches), consistency over time and an unwavering commitment to quality editorial and content.
My background as Assistant Editor for Horse & Rider magazine in the UK gave me a very strong editorial foundation early on – not just in writing and editing, but in understanding audience, structure, tone and what makes content genuinely engaging.
From there, I moved more deeply into the ranch travel space and over the past 13 years I’ve specialised almost exclusively in this niche.
That level of focus I think has been key. Rather than positioning myself as a general luxury and adventure travel writer, I’ve spent over a decade truly understanding the guest ranch world; the nuances of the experience, the expectations of guests and the distinct voice each property needs to convey.
It means I’m not learning on the job with each client, I’m bringing insight, context and instinct that only comes from long-term immersion.
Working with well-known and well-loved ranch travel authority Gene for over 10 years has also played a significant role. Gene is highly respected in the guest ranch world with over 45 years in the industry, and being trusted as his writer and editor for such a sustained period speaks to both the quality and consistency of my work.
That kind of long-term collaboration naturally builds credibility – not just through association, but through the volume and standard of work produced over time.

Equally, being trusted by leading guest ranches such as The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch in Wyoming to shape and elevate their blog content is something I’m incredibly proud of.
When established, high-calibre brands like The Hideout place their voice in your hands, it’s both a responsibility and a strong endorsement!
I think another important factor is that I’ve always approached my work with an editor’s mindset, not just a writer’s.
I’m meticulous about clarity, flow and tone – but also about purpose. Every piece of content needs to do something: to position, to attract, to convert, or to deepen connection.
That strategic layer, combined with high editorial standards, I think is something clients really value and return for.
And finally, consistency. Despite time differences, long travel itineraries and working 100% remotely from my clients, I’ve shown up, delivered and maintained standards over many years in a relatively small, close-knit industry.
Reputation in a niche like this isn’t built overnight, it’s built through trust, reliability and results over time.
Ultimately, I think my reputation comes down to this: I understand this world, I care deeply about the brands and the people I work with who work so, so hard to build them, and I consistently produce work that reflects and elevates the quality they strive to deliver to their clients.
